With the start of the New Year, things have been very busy here at ADR Social Media. In addition to completing some projects for clients, I’m in the middle of launching a new social platform called Dialing 8 – an online professional learning community for businesses who want to take the leap into social media. It’s for those who want to do it themselves and for those who feel the need a bit of support. We work using online forums, face-to-face video conferencing, one-on-one tutorials and Q&A sessions.
During one of our session, a member asked how to go about getting more Facebook likes. He had started a Fan page and wanted to populate it with not only friends and family but colleagues and customers as well. We spent some time discussing this but after the session was done, I was still pondering his question.
Put Yourself Out There
As I checked the status on my own Facebook Fan Page and made a few tweaks, I noticed that activity was down. It was then that I realized that during the holiday season, when most of us are busy with family and friends and spending less and less time online, my interactions with others had dropped off. I hadn’t commented, engaged or asked as many question. It was at this point that I realized that the best answer to our member’s question about how to get more (organic) likes is to put yourself out there.
Good Old-Fashioned Business Practice
I realized it’s not about setting up an interesting Facebook Fan Page. It’s not about how many contests you have or how many polls you create. It’s about the good old-fashioned business practice of putting yourself out there and engaging with your customers on their turf.
Don’t wait for people to come to your wildly creative and massively interesting page and comment. Go out and seek interesting posts and comment on them yourself. Like someone else’s page, comment on their business, ask them about their day – all on their Fan Page. If we remember to do this on a daily basis, your organic Fan Page likes will increase. I promise.
